Ashton Hills Vineyard

Ashton Hills is long regarded as the benchmark for Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir. It was founded in 1982 by Stephen George, in partnership with Peter van Rood, who financed the original vineyard. At a time when Brian Croser was almost alone in developing the region, their pioneering work helped put the Adelaide Hills on the map.

The three-hectare vineyard sits at 570 metres in the Piccadilly Valley, on a south-facing ridge just below Mount Lofty, one of the coolest sites in South Australia. Bought from a market gardener, it was planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, and over more than 30 years Stephen's experiments made Ashton Hills a leader in clonal selection for the emerging region.

The winemaking is simple and minimal-intervention, designed to capture the site. Alongside its celebrated Pinot Noir, Ashton Hills makes fine Chardonnay and Riesling, and devotees can join the Martini Club. Ashton Hills is now owned by Wirra Wirra.
