Bremerton Wines

Bremerton Wines is the Willson family's winery in Langhorne Creek, today run by sisters Rebecca and Lucy Willson. The region sits on the rich soils of the Bremer River flood plain, cooled by evening breezes from Lake Alexandrina, giving mild to warm days, cool nights and long ripening for intense cool-climate flavours. First settled in the 1850s by English shipwright Frank Potts, who planted grapes, it has grown from 450 hectares of vines to around 6,000, the second-largest grape-growing region in South Australia.

The family bought the 40-hectare Bremerton Lodge property in 1985, when it was an irrigated lucerne farm. Bremerton Wines began in 1988 with 57 dozen of Cabernet Sauvignon from a neighbour's grapes, followed by years of small-batch experiments and a first Shiraz in 1991, before two blocks of the farm were identified as suited to vines and planted. The winery follows certified organic production practices and is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

At the cellar door, a beautiful extension to the restored 1866 stone barn, visitors can enjoy regionally inspired lunches, gin flights and award-winning wines, and the Bremerton Wine Society delivers packs chosen by the sisters each March and September.
