By Farr is a family-owned winery in the Moorabool Valley, in the Geelong region, founded in 1994 by Gary Farr and now run by his son Nick and Nick's wife Cassie. Gary and Robyn Farr bought the original property in 1994 and a second section in 1998, which had lain untouched for almost 40 years under boxthorn and weeds; Nick and Cassie bought the land linking the two in 2011.
The Sangreal vineyard, planted in 1994, is the oldest, on a north-facing slope of bluestone over limestone with red ironstone at the surface, unlike the black volcanic soils of the other vineyards. The cool climate and varied terroir suit Viognier, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz, made with minimal intervention.
Father and son each have a distinct style: By Farr reflects Gary's, and Farr Rising is Nick's own label, and both are critically acclaimed. The family has three labels in all. There is no cellar door, but the family can be contacted directly.
