Chalmers

Chalmers is a family wine business run by Bruce and Jenni Chalmers and their family, who have been a major force in Australian viticulture for around 30 years. From 1989 to 2008 they ran Chalmers Nurseries at Euston in New South Wales, one of Australia's largest wholesale vine nurseries.

The family's greatest contribution has been diversity. Through partnerships with Italian nurseries, Chalmers imported about 70 mostly Italian grape varieties and clones, released in Australia from 2000, and these have helped Australian growers find varieties better suited to a warming, drier climate. In 2009 and 2010 the family planted source blocks of these varieties at Heathcote and at Merbein near Mildura, and later added a second wave of Italian white varieties. They were named Gourmet Traveller WINE's Viticulturists of the Year.

Chalmers makes its own wines at its Merbein winery using native yeasts, with fruit from its Heathcote and Murray Darling vineyards, focusing on Italian varieties across ranges such as the experimental Chalmers Project wines.
