Chris Ringland

Chris Ringland is a Barossa winemaker who grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, where in 1974, as a teenager, he began making wine at home from an old recipe book, with schoolmates helping to pick neighbourhood backyard vines. His fascination with the science of winemaking led to a career in the Barossa.

His Dimchurch Vineyards include the old Dallwitz block, bought from the Dallwitz family in 1945 and planted by 1912, possibly as early as 1888, making it among the oldest Shiraz in the region. Other blocks were planted in 1951-52 from cuttings of 1880s vines, in 1964 and from 1994 to 1999, with some rows oriented to the summer sun's path. Olives were planted in 1999 on a south-facing slope unsuited to Shiraz.

The North Barossa Shiraz blends fruit from nine Ebenezer growers, neighbours, friends and relatives of fifth-generation vigneron Adrian Hoffmann, many of whose families have farmed there for three or more generations.
