Drakesbrook Wines is a family winery at Waroona in Western Australia's Peel region, named after the small river, the Drakesbrook, that runs through the farm. In 2000 Bernie and his wife Trish bought an abandoned farm there.
Bernie, a rural property valuer, had long dreamed of owning a vineyard and learned from the vignerons whose properties he valued. He was inspired by a 1992 lecture in which Dr John Gladstones identified the hills from Chittering to the Ferguson Valley as well suited to Mediterranean varieties, and looked for an elevated site with gravelly loam within 90 minutes of Perth. He went on to study winemaking at Charles Sturt University.
Drakesbrook is an artisan maker of table wines specialising in alternative and emerging varieties. The newly renovated cellar door in Waroona has a licensed picnic area.
