Finestra is the family vineyard of Bruce and Jo-Anne Lang at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley. In 1987 they bought a horse paddock, built a house, planted a vineyard and raised a family there, scratching an itch Bruce developed in vacation jobs in the young Yarra vineyards of the 1970s. Family and friends planted the vines in 1989, with more in 1996.
The six-acre vineyard sits on a gentle north-facing slope at the foot of Yeringberg hill, on the grey loams prized by François de Castella and other 19th-century Yarra vignerons, and grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Though not certified organic, the Langs favour manual work and use no pesticides.
The name comes from 'dalla mia finestra', Italian for 'from my window', reflecting the view of the vines from the family home and the Langs' love of Italian culture.
