Heggies Vineyard

Heggies Vineyard is a single site in the Barossa's high country, in the Eden Valley next to the Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, within 153 hectares of rugged landscape. Its story began in 1972, when local character Colin Heggie sold the cool-climate land to his friend Wyndham Hill-Smith, who dreamed of growing exceptional Chardonnay; the first vines were planted in 1973, and Riesling soon followed.

The close-planted vines grow in a thin layer of grey sandy loam over clay and decomposed rock, which forces deep roots, and the altitude keeps conditions cool. For every hectare of vineyard, a hectare of native vegetation is preserved or planted, and Heggies is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

Winemaker Marc, a Stellenbosch-trained South African, came to the Barossa in 2013 for a vintage at Yalumba, honed his craft under chief winemaker Louisa Rose at Hill-Smith Family Estates, and joined Heggies in 2021.
