Karrawatta

Karrawatta is a family wine label with roots in one of South Australia's oldest wine stories. Mark Gilbert's great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Gilbert made his first wine in 1847 on a property called Karrawatta, but lost a coin toss at a local pub and had to rename it Pewsey Vale. The family has continued in viticulture ever since.

Karrawatta has been revived with small-batch, single-vineyard wines from three family-owned vineyards: Sophie's Hill, planted in 1996 and one of the highest sites in the Adelaide Hills, named after Mark's daughter; Ace of Trumps, planted in 2001 after detailed soil mapping; and Christo's Paddock. Between them the vineyards span the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. The winemaking is minimal-intervention.

All three vineyards are accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, and a 120 kW solar system powers Sophie's Hill. The cellar door near Meadows offers tastings comparing Shiraz from all three regions, museum releases and vineyard tours.
