Knappstein

Knappstein has been one of the Clare Valley's best-known premium wineries since it was established in 1974. From the beginning its focus has been to showcase fruit from the region's individual soils and climates, respecting each site to make wines with identity and personality. Under a distinguished vineyards philosophy, it manages some of the best vineyards in the Clare Valley itself, and its style has evolved towards medium-bodied, fruit-driven wines that are inviting young yet gain sophistication with age.

The winery and cellar door occupy the former Enterprise Brewery in Clare, a National Trust-listed landmark. It was built in 1878 to 1880 by Fanny Filgate, an entrepreneurial businesswoman and eldest daughter of Clare's founder Edward Burton (Paddy) Gleeson, to quench the thirst of the local copper miners. Renamed Clare Brewery in 1905, it went on to own fifteen hotels in the district and sent beer as far as Broken Hill by rail.

Knappstein is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, working to minimise its impact in the vineyard, winery and office. Visitors can taste the premium range inside the historic brewery building in the heart of town.
