Mount Mary is a family-owned single-vineyard estate in the heart of the Yarra Valley, established in 1971 by John and Marli Middleton and one of the first vineyards planted in the valley's modern era. In the 1960s the Middletons travelled the world's wine regions, especially Bordeaux and Burgundy, and set out to make something similar in Australia. In 1971 they found an unplanted, gentle north-facing slope that suited their purpose.
Three generations of the family have since made wines of elegance and longevity, entirely from estate-grown fruit and produced and bottled on site. Most are sold through a private mailing list.
The estate is not certified organic or biodynamic, but it limits machinery in the vineyard, sows cover crops in alternate rows and takes part in Melbourne Water's Stream Frontage program. Its 2024 Triolet was named White Wine of the Year and Wine of the Year.
