Novum

Novum is a small family wine business in Marlborough, New Zealand, founded by winemakers who wanted the independence to experiment after years working for others. One came to wine through a geology degree and postgraduate oenology at the University of Adelaide, with early vintages alongside Véronique Drouhin in Oregon and Dominique Lafon in Burgundy, and has a particular love of Chardonnay.

The heart of Novum is The Oaks vineyard, where the family lives, planted by William's parents John and Philippa in 1979-80 in the early days of Marlborough wine. The team also works the close-planted Quarters vineyard in the Brancott Valley, which they have made wine from for almost 20 years, and Riverbrook.

About seven years ago they planted an acre of Syrah, drawing on two decades of learning, in pursuit of a truly great Syrah.
