Nautilus Estate developed the Opawa vineyard, purchasing the land in two parts in 2001 and 2003. The name translates from Maori as 'Smoky River'. Spanning 25 hectares of stony ground, the property sits on the old Opawa river bed. While grapes were first planted in the wider district during the mid-1990s, the estate also sources fruit from other Marlborough vineyards to balance the flavours of its home block.
The producer crafts wines from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Noir Rosé varieties. Grapes harvested from the stony home block are blended with fruit brought in from outside Marlborough sites to complete the winemaking approach.
