Pipan Steel is a tiny vineyard at Mudgegonga in the foothills of the Australian Alps, three and a half hours north of Melbourne, devoted only to Nebbiolo. The owners searched across Australia for the right hillside, elevation and soil before settling there.
Three Nebbiolo clones from Gruppo Matura in Italy are planted in east-west rows on a sunny north-east-facing slope falling from 410 to 390 metres. The 2,000 vines are closely spaced and arch-cane pruned.
