Poonawatta

Poonawatta is a boutique Eden Valley winery making small-volume, single-vineyard wines from old vines with genuine provenance, handcrafted from soil to vine to bottle. The name comes from the language of the Peramangk peoples, traditional custodians of the Mount Lofty Ranges and Eden Valley, and today fifth and sixth-generation descendants of James Heggie continue the family's Eden Valley legacy.

At its heart is the original Poonawatta Shiraz vineyard, planted in 1880, which returned to the family's Poonawatta property in 1971 through the vision of Sue and John Holt. The winery describes its old vines as part of the legacy of Australia's oldest vines, combining generational heritage with world-class winemaking. It is also part of the Wildlife for Wine project, which develops biodiversity action plans for conservation, ecological health and regeneration.

The cellar door, in the heart of the Eden Valley, the Barossa's beautiful high country and one of Australia's premier cool-climate regions, offers tastings and experiences across single-vineyard, old-vine and regional wines.
