Prince Albert Vineyard occupies two hectares on the north-facing slope of the Waurn Ponds Valley near Geelong, on half a metre of terra rossa over limestone marl. The site carries the name of an earlier vineyard from the region's pioneering era, when Swiss-born David Pettavel planted Geelong's first vineyard in 1842, before phylloxera and the gold rush ended the industry in the late 1870s.
Both the vineyard and winery have been certified organic to Biological Farmers of Australia standards since 1998.
David Yates, who grew up on a mixed farm and studied chemistry, bought the vineyard in 2007 and has improved it without changing the style of the wine.
