Quartz Reef

Quartz Reef was established in 1996 by Rudi Bauer, John Perriam and Trevor Scott at Bendigo in Central Otago, New Zealand. Rudi arrived from Austria in 1985, and in 1990, while at Rippon, made Central Otago's first sparkling base wine.

The first vines were planted in 1998 on the sunny slopes of Bendigo Station, the pioneering vineyard in what was then open country, named after the great seam of quartz running through the land. The first harvest came in 2001, and the estate has grown to 30 hectares, making traditional-method sparkling alongside Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.

Conversion to biodynamic farming began in 2007, and the estate is Demeter certified. The cellar door is inside the winery at the top of Cromwell's Pinot Noir Drive.
