Santolin Wines is the Yarra Valley label of Adrian and Rebecca, first-generation wine pioneers raising a family and making small-batch, lo-fi wines. Both have worked in wine for more than half their lives, Adrian growing up with Italian heritage and working on his grandparents' farm and at a local winery as a teenager, and Rebecca bringing her Kiwi heritage. After years at other wineries, in 2012 they put all their spare money into one barrel, one tank and two tonnes of Pinot Noir and started doing things their own way.
They cheerfully admit they have no centuries-old dynasty or exotic origin story, just experience, passion and a dream to live life loving what they do. Their wines are wild fermented, a natural process that brings out subtle complexities of site and region, and unfined, so they are vegan friendly.
Success came quickly: Santolin won Best New Act at the Young Gun of Wine Awards, picked up trophies including Best New World Chardonnay and Best International Chardonnay at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition and Decanter Asia, and its wines have been served in Qantas international business class.
