SC Pannell

SC Pannell is the McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills winery of Stephen Pannell and his wife Fiona, built on the conviction that place is the most important factor in making truly great wine. Stephen believes the region's benign Mediterranean climate and complex mosaic of ancient geology suit a palette of varieties beyond the traditional, and the winery has become known for signature wines from Grenache, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Aglianico, Nero d'Avola and Fiano.

Over nine years the Pannells gradually acquired four vineyards, each planted to the variety that suits it best: Nebbiolo in the Adelaide Hills, Aglianico at Olivers Road in McLaren Vale, Grenache in Blewitt Springs and Shiraz at Upper Tintara in the McLaren Vale foothills. Stephen fell in love with Koomilya, a distinctive 35-hectare McLaren Vale property with its own microclimate, in the 1990s and bought it in 2012; it produces intensely structured Shiraz. The Adelaide Hills vineyard has proven an ideal home for Nebbiolo, and the 2022 Protero Nebbiolo was named in Halliday's Top 100 Wines for 2025.

The Pannells' approach combines decades of winemaking experience with close attention to each vineyard's soil, aspect and history, and has inspired a generation of winemakers interested in alternative varieties.
