Simon Hackett Wines was established in McLaren Vale in 1984 by winemaker Simon Hackett, who trained under Peter Lehmann at Saltram and was senior winemaker at the Southern Vales Co-operative. In 1998 he bought the former Taranga winery on Budgens Road.
He managed about 8 hectares of estate vines and sourced fruit from McLaren Vale, the Barossa and the Adelaide Hills, known for Old Vine Semillon, Old Vine Grenache and Shiraz. The business went into liquidation after his retirement, and Simon Hackett died in January 2026.
