Smallfry Wines

Smallfry Wines is a partnership in business and life between Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens, Barossa viticulturists who were bitten by the winemaking bug and could not resist turning their own fruit into wine. They own two special vineyards: one in the Eden Valley, which they have tended since 1994, and one at Vine Vale on the valley floor, long the seat of the Schlieb family, whose last incumbent put in 52 vintages before hanging up his snips. Their vineyards and winery have been certified organic and biodynamic since April 2014, and the vineyard has been named among Australia's top 50.

As keen foodies, Suzi and Wayne make wine in a food-friendly, European style with an eye to balance and subtlety. All wines are made in small batches to show the character of the Barossa's subregions, using their own fruit and that of selected growers, because getting the fruit right is most of the battle.

The biggest difference from most of the Barossa is that Smallfry relies on wild yeast for the primary ferment. Natural ferments, little or no adjustment, old oak and a soft hand in the cellar let the vineyard speak, and the couple describe their approach as the genuine article: handmade, traditional and with minimal intervention.
