Spinifex was established in 2001 by Peter Schell and Magali Gely, who saw an opportunity to source great old-vine Mataro growing in deep white sand on the Barossa Valley's Western Ridge. The couple have a strong French connection: Magali's family were long-time vignerons at Lunel, near Montpellier, and Peter worked vintages in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence and the Languedoc early in his career.
Their time in the south of France inspired handcrafted wines with personality: generous, honest expressions of variety and place, especially Mediterranean varieties such as Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz and Cinsault. Relationships with dedicated Barossa and Eden Valley growers have been the foundation of the business, and in 2014 and 2018 Spinifex bought its own vineyards: Rostein in the Eden Valley and Dominion on the Barossa Valley floor.
The wines aim to show vineyard and vintage, regional character and a consistent house style. Spinifex's tasting room is at Nuriootpa.
