Te Mata Estate is one of New Zealand's oldest wineries, established in 1896 and still family owned, making wines exclusively from its own Hawke's Bay vineyards. Its story began on Te Mata Station, a pastoral property near Havelock North, where Bernard Chambers, inspired by time in France, planted Chardonnay, Cabernet and Pinot Noir on the north-facing hillsides in 1892 and turned the old stables into a winery. Wine has been made in those same buildings, from those same original vineyards, ever since.
The Chambers family sold the property in 1919, and in 1974 it was bought by the Buck and Morris families, who built the modern estate. Te Mata specialises in classically styled wines and handles every step itself, from growing and pruning the grapes to small-batch winemaking.
The estate has long been a pioneer in New Zealand wine, from introducing new varieties to the country to lighter recycled bottles, vineyard conservation, regenerative viticulture and water and carbon auditing.
