Tilbrook Estate was established in 1999 by James and Annabelle Tilbrook, who searched Australia's cool-climate regions before choosing Lenswood, one of the coolest grape-growing areas in the Adelaide Hills. Their philosophy is simple: 'hand made by our hands', with the couple involved in every step from vineyard to bottle.
The vineyard is close-planted at about double the usual density for the Adelaide Hills, with rows running across the slope and some blocks terraced, so rain soaks in rather than running off and the fruit ripens evenly.
In December 2019 the Cudlee Creek bushfire swept through the property, destroying the winery, wine stock, most of the vineyard, pasture, fencing and sheds in a single afternoon. The Tilbrooks have since rebuilt, and the cellar door offers tastings and lunch for small groups.
