Woodlands

Woodlands is a family-owned winery in Margaret River's Wilyabrup Valley, founded by David and Heather Watson and now led by their sons Andrew and Stuart, with David and Heather still actively involved. In recognition of their contribution, David and Heather received the Margaret River Wine Industry Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 and the Jack Mann Memorial Medal in 2016.

The family's two vineyards now cover 28 hectares, and the original Woodlands Vineyard is certified organic. Its 'Chloe' block of the famous Wente (Mendoza) clone of Chardonnay inspired the family's most ambitious venture: from 2013 they planted seven hectares of Chardonnay on the Woodlands Brook Vineyard, on a gentle south-facing slope of sandy loam over clay, using selection massale cuttings from Chloe at 5,000 vines per hectare. The Woodlands Brook Chardonnay has been made since 2018, and the site's first Cabernet, harvested in 2015, proved too good to blend away, leading to a new dry-grown blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.

The cellar door has grown into a lively meeting place, with a full-time chef serving house-made bread, grazing boards and seasonal plates using vegetables from beds below the cellar door, and the family hosts events for its community in Australia and abroad.
