White variety

Gewürztraminer

An intensely perfumed white grape with notes of lychee, rose and spice.

History

Gewürztraminer is an aromatic form of the ancient Traminer (Savagnin) grape, named after the village of Tramin in northern Italy. Alsace is its most famous home, and 'Gewürz' means spice in German.

Gewürztraminer in Australia

Known in Australia simply as Traminer, it has been grown since the 1800s and was popular in sweet Traminer-Riesling blends in the 1970s and 80s. Today it is mostly grown in cool regions such as Tasmania, the Eden Valley, the Adelaide Hills and Mornington Peninsula.

Tasting notes

Full-bodied with low acidity and an exotic perfume. Expect lychee, rose petal, Turkish delight, ginger and spice, often with a slightly oily texture.
