Portugal's most celebrated red grape, central to port and increasingly made into dry table wine.
History
Touriga Nacional is native to northern Portugal, where it is considered the finest grape for port in the Douro Valley and also makes powerful dry reds in the Douro and Dão. Its yields are naturally low, which concentrates its colour and flavour.
Touriga Nacional in Australia
Touriga Nacional has been grown in Australia for fortified wine for many years. More recently it has gained attention for dry red table wine and blends.
It is grown in McLaren Vale, the Barossa, the Riverland, Heathcote and north-east Victoria.
Tasting notes
Deep in colour and full-bodied with firm tannins. Expect blackberry, blueberry and plum, with a striking floral (violet) perfume, bergamot, liquorice and spice.
