Apogee is the small northern Tasmanian sparkling wine estate of Dr Andrew Pirie, a pioneer of Tasmanian wine. In December 1973 Andrew and his brother David bought land in the search for a site like the cool regions of northern France, research that became his University of Sydney doctorate in viticulture in 1977; that land became Pipers Brook Vineyard.
After managing vineyards of up to 413 hectares, Andrew left Pipers Brook in 2003, convinced that small scale is essential for the highest quality. Apogee is deliberately limited to 2 hectares, the size of an average holding in Champagne.
Its Deluxe Vintage Brut and Rosé have scored 95 points and more from critics including James Halliday and Huon Hooke. The estate also makes ALTO Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, and visits are by booking.
