Tasmania

Australia's coolest wine state, prized for sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

History

Vines were planted in Tasmania in the 1820s, and cuttings from the island helped start vineyards on the mainland, but the industry faded in the late 1800s. It was revived in the 1950s by Jean Miguet at La Provence and Claudio Alcorso at Moorilla, and grew rapidly from the 1980s.

Tasmania is a single wine region, with well-known areas such as the Tamar Valley, Pipers River, Coal River Valley, Derwent Valley, Huon Valley and the East Coast.
