Boydell's is a family farm and vineyard near Gresford in the Hunter Valley, on land settled in 1826 by Welshman Charles Boydell. Charles grew tobacco and wine there and planted Verdelho, Muscatelle and other varieties in what is arguably the first vineyard in the Hunter Valley; Verdelho is grown on the same site today.
Jane and Daniel Maroulis bought the property and, intrigued by its history, started the Boydell's label. The rich soil was replanted with vines in 1997, and the family also sources fruit from growers in the Hunter and cooler NSW regions. Alongside the vineyard they breed cattle and raise four daughters.
The cellar door and restaurant are in a historic slab hut in the village of Morpeth, a town Charles's diaries record him visiting by horse and paddle steamer.
