Hunter Valley

Australia's oldest continuously operating wine region, north of Sydney, famous for long-lived Semillon and medium-bodied Shiraz.

History

James Busby, often called the father of Australian wine, planted vines at Kirkton in the 1830s, and families such as Lindeman, Drayton and Tyrrell (from 1858) followed. The Hunter's warm, humid summers and harvest rain shaped a unique style of lighter, earthy reds and delicate whites.

Its closeness to Sydney made it one of Australia's most visited wine regions, and Tyrrell's released one of the country's first varietal Chardonnays in the early 1970s.
