Clarence House Wines

Clarence House Estate is a vineyard in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges, halfway between Hobart and the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. It was bought and planted in 1998 by David Kilpatrick, a former cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Tasmania and a passionate lover of Old World wines.

First planted to 6 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the north-east-facing vineyard on dolerite and basalt soils has grown to 13 hectares, adding more Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Almost all of it is on its own roots, with a wide range of clones. Fruit was sold until the vines matured, and the Clarence House label was created in 2006.

The wines are made by Anna and Justin Pooley of Pooley Wines, and the vineyard is managed by Mark Hoey, formerly of Stefano Lubiana. There are three labels: Clarence Plains, Clarence House Estate and Clarence House Reserve.
