Ghost Rock Vineyard

Ghost Rock is a family winery on Tasmania's Cradle Coast, also known as the North West wine region, one of the state's coolest, just 15 minutes from Devonport where the Spirit of Tasmania docks. Cate and Colin Arnold established it in 2001 on a run-down property east of Devonport with only a handful of vines. Their son Justin and his wife Alicia joined in 2015 and took full ownership in 2017; Justin runs the winemaking and Alicia the cellar door and eatery.

The name comes from local folklore. Around 1895, Lou Wilson was riding to the Northdown post office to post a letter to his sweetheart when white-clad 'ghosts' leapt out from behind a rock, frightening him and his horse so badly that he turned for home. Baiting riders at the spot became a popular local prank, and although the rock was removed in a 1950s road realignment, the name keeps the story and a sense of fun alive.

All Ghost Rock wines are grown, made and bottled on site. The modern cellar door and eatery looks over the vineyards to Bass Strait, offering tastings of the full range and lunch from local produce, and the three-bedroom Vineyard House provides accommodation for exploring the north.
