La Prova

La Prova, Italian for 'the trial', is a grand experiment bringing together traditional Italian grape varieties and ancient Australian soils. Winemaker Sam Scott founded it in 2008 after two decades working overseas and in South Australia, having developed an early affinity with Italian varieties and coming to see Australia as an ideal place to grow them, especially as temperatures rise.

Italian varieties need less water and thrive in warmer conditions, so La Prova sees them as future-ready and inherently sustainable. It has trialled sixteen varieties so far, each grown where it suits best, largely across the varied topography of the Adelaide Hills but also further afield, such as Prosecco from the King Valley and Nero d'Avola from McLaren Vale. The winemaking centres on careful work in the vineyard and choosing exactly the right day to pick, refining the textural, savoury character of the varieties into approachable, sophisticated wines.

There are two ranges: La Prova, and La Prova Uno, single-site expressions from exceptional vineyards. The cellar door opens on the first weekend of each month, the winery hosts a Winemakers Table dinner series, and it is moving to a new home at Uraidla, opening in 2027.
