Lake's Folly

Lake's Folly was established in 1963 by Dr Max Lake, the first new vineyard planted in the Hunter Valley in the 20th century. Max Lake OAM, Australia's first specialist hand surgeon, an internationally known author, winemaker and show judge, was hailed by The Bulletin in 1988 as 'the man who started the Australian wine boom'.

In early 2000 Peter and Lee Fogarty and family bought Lake's Folly, and with Hunter-born winemaker Rodney Kempe, who started in 1988 with vintages for Brian McGuigan and at Rothbury Estate under Len Evans, have maintained its integrity. Assistant winemaker Pete has worked there continuously since 1984, alongside Max and Stephen Lake and then Rod.

The well-established vines give low-cropping, high-quality fruit, consistent even in difficult years, for the Cabernets and Chardonnay released each year.
