Mitchelton

Mitchelton sits on the Goulburn River near Nagambie, where explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the river in 1836 on his journey between Sydney and Melbourne; the area was once meant to become a town called Mitchellstown. In the 1960s Ross Shelmerdine enlisted renowned winemaker Colin Preece to find an ideal site for premium grapes in Victoria, and the first sod of the vineyard was turned in 1969.

The winery, cellar door and distinctive observation tower were designed by the famous Australian architect Robin Boyd. Mitchelton became known for Shiraz and Rhône varieties such as Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, and in its heyday it hosted outdoor concerts by stars including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Bryan Adams.

The Ryan family bought Mitchelton in 2011 and in 2018 opened a luxury boutique hotel and day spa on the estate. Visitors can now combine the cellar door and restaurant with an overnight stay in the hotel or the cabins along the river.
