Piano Piano is the Beechworth label of Marc Scalzo and Lisa Hernan, who make premium estate-grown single-vineyard wines on the town's 'golden mile', among some of the region's best-known producers. Marc aims to let each vineyard tell its own story rather than impose his own style.
Marc learned about wine at the family table from his father Mario, and after a Monash science degree and five years at IBM went on to study wine science at Charles Sturt University. He was a winemaker at Brown Brothers for seven years and worked vintages at Giaconda and in New Zealand.
In 1997 he planted his first vines with Geoff Simpson at the Brangie vineyard in the King Valley, source of Oliver's Blend and Mario's Blend. After a seven-year search, Marc and Lisa bought their Beechworth property in 2003 and planted Chardonnay in 2006 and Shiraz in 2008 on its granitic soils.
