Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the partnership of winemaker and viticulturist Tessa Brown and architect Jeremy Schmölzer. In 2014 and 2015 they planted their Thorley vineyard, just south of Stanley in the highest part of the Beechworth region, and they describe themselves as high-altitude, almost sub-alpine specialists, with much of their fruit from vineyards above 700 metres.

The Thorley wines are entirely estate grown and made. They also work with the tiny Brunnen vineyard across the road and source the Obstgarten wines from a mature, unirrigated Riesling vineyard at Whitlands in the King Valley. The Prêt-à-Blanc, Prêt-à-Rosé and Prêt-à-Rouge blends are made for easy drinking.

The vineyard is farmed to an organic protocol in all but the hardest years, though it is not certified, and they make their own compost. Fruit is hand-picked and fermented with native yeasts, with minimal additions, no fining, and filtration only for whites. Their winery and home are off-grid and solar powered.
