Granite Belt

Queensland's best-known wine region, a high granite plateau around Stanthorpe near the New South Wales border.

History

Italian families who settled after the First World War grew table grapes here, and winemaking expanded from the 1960s and 70s. The region's altitude, mostly over 800 metres, gives it a cool climate despite its northern location.

It promotes alternative varieties under the name 'Strange Birds'.
